Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (Full Name: Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam) was a great scientist, honored with Bharat Ratna, and the 11th President of India. He is also known as “missile man” and “ß of the public”. His life is a symbol of struggle, hard work and patriotism. Below is a description of the major events and struggles of his life, Abdul Kalam was born into an ordinary Muslim family. His father used to drive a boat and the condition of the house was very normal. Since childhood, Kalam ji saw poverty, but his dreams were always big.

Early life and struggle:

Despite financial difficulties, he felt a lot in studies. Since childhood, he was influenced by science and flying items. His teacher Mr. Jainulabddin Marakayar showed him dreams of flying. His dream took him towards making him a great scientist. He was a disciplined, humble and ambitious student. His father used to drive a boat and provide Ferry service to the pilgrims. Apj Abdul Kalam was smart in studies since childhood and was deeply interested in science, he completed schooling from Ramanathapuram. Later graduated in Physics from St. Joseph’s College, Trichy. Then studied Aeronautical Engineering from Madras Institute of Technology (MIT). Here he proved himself with hard work. He was very hardworking in studies, but many times he failed. The dream of becoming a pilot in the Air Force was broken when he could not come in the final selection list. But they did not consider it to be the end but discovered new avenues .

Scientific career:

Dr. Kalam worked in DRDO (Defense Research and Development Organization) and ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization).
He was the head of India’s first indigenous satellite launch vehicle (SLV-III). He played an important role in the construction of Agni and Prithvi missiles, calling him a “missile man of India”. He also played an important role in India’s Pokhran nuclear test in 1998.

President’s post:

Apj Abdul Kalam was the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007.He was very popular among the public and was called the “President of the public”. He gave many speeches to inspire children and youth while being President, he always inspired children and youth to dream and fulfill them. Abdul Kalam did a lot for the people who are still in the hearts of the people, Abdul Kalam opened the Rashtrapati Bhavan for the general public. He interacted directly with the youth, students and teachers, by which people could directly convey their voice to the President and described their role in nation building as important.

He wrote several books, including “Wings of Fire”, “Ignited Minds”, “India 2020” and “My Journey”. His autobiography “Wings of Fire” is especially  inspiring for the youth.

Last time:

On 27 July 2015, when he was giving lectures to students in IIM Shillong, he suffered a heart attack and died. He continued to serve the country till his last time.
